Epidemic… Over – 2012 – a look back (and a quick look forward)

It’s always a great idea to look back to reflect on what you have achieved, if for no other reason than to know where you are heading in the future. Even though 2012 isn’t quite over, and Epidemic… Over still have a few shows to go in the year, this is the first post of the 4 Pricewar Music bands who are going to recount their experiences this year and EK and I will cap it off with our experiences and a roundup. Ben Castles from Epidemic… Over shares his memories of what has been an “exception”-al year for the lads. I have been stoked to have been a part of it and definitely Adelaide was a huge highlight. I love the photo of the lads here. It is a candid moment from their photoshoot with Tim Williams. – TIM PRICE

BEN CASTLES – 2012 was a year that was set to be a challenging one.  On New Year’s Eve the band was greeted with the news that Truck was going to become a father.  This was great news to add to what was going to be an already eventful year with the March 10th release of our EP “Long Way Home”.

Before the EP was released we headed to Adelaide to showcase at the annual FUSE festival and also jumped onto a slot at O Week celebrations.   This was a great experience as it was the first time we had flown to a show!

To celebrate the release of the EP through MGM Distribution, we booked out the rooftop of a local Gladstone venue The Blue Room, where we treated local fans with something a bit different.  There was merch on sale, an acoustic show, and general meet and greet with people that had supported us from the beginning and those who had helped us financially.  This was followed by a massive release show at the Tempo in Brisbane with all our mates (This Collision, Cute Machines (with our producer Clint Vincent), Drawcard and You Say When), and a substantial tour of the East Coast.  We Played Bondi, Sydney, Melbourne (The Espy!), Warrnambool, Sunny Coast, Byron Bay and many other amazing places, along with bands like Closure in Moscow, Strangers, Over-Reactor, The Mission in Motion and HELM.

With the tour also involved the drive.  Driving from Brisbane to Melbourne, Melbourne to Gladstone, and then Gladstone to all other places besides our second “fly” dates in Bondi and Sydney.  In Sydney we were greeted with a 5AM text saying we were on RAGE, as we were sitting in the carpark of a 24hr Maccas as the Airport was locked out…WTF.  Good news always cheers up a shit situation!

After the tour wrapped up we had one more support slot, that being Dead Letter Circus at the HiFi in Brisbane.  We were all stoked to get selected to play the show with the boys and it proved to be a cracker.  It was an honour to be playing with Fair To Midland (US) and Twelve Foot Ninja, and Dead Letter Circus on such a high scale show.

Having a few months off for us all to regain some cash and for Truck to take on challenge of becoming a father, proved to be well worth it.  Having not really stopped for the 5 years previous it was great to have a break.

Now we embark on our final shows for 2012 on the Exceptions Single release tour through-out Queensland.  Then the band looks forward to hanging out, hitting the writing room and hopefully creating an album next year.
